3 Cool Things from Bloomfields Flowers

In case you missed our post this week, we went to the holiday season launch at Bloomfields Flowers in the Glebe. Bloomfields is one of those (much-too-rare) magical retail spaces where every item looks as those it was carefully hand-picked and placed exactly where it should be in the store. And don’t even get us started on the flowers!

Their holiday season stock was so wonderful, we just had to point out a few of our favourite things again. So here they are, and if you missed our post, just keep scrolling down and you’ll see it right below this post.

1. Klippan Blankets

A bit of background. Klippan is a family owned business that started in Sweden in 1879. Their blankets are made with pure lambs wool from New Zealand and the designs are incredibly beautiful which makes it difficult to decide which one to buy. Klippan is one of the very few producers of this kind left in Europe. These blankets are meant to be handed down to future generations. I have my eye on the one second from the left…

Great for Christmas…and all year long as far as we’re concerned.

By now you know how much we love Jimmy Fallon and his very talented guests. This week’s videos feature the stars of True Detective, Colin Farrell and Vince Vaughn. The very funny Amy Schumer and the always amazing Kevin Spacey.

3 Cool Jimmy Fallon Clips

We could devote an entire page to Jimmy Fallon clips. Neither of us have cable and we’d never be up that late even if we did, but his show looks great all the time.

1. Jimmy Fallon, Ellen DeGeneres Lip Sync Battle

…with Justin Timberlake as judge…too much fun…

2. Jimmy Fallon, Justin Timberlake Hashtag Convo

3. Jimmy Fallon, Ariana Grande Musical Impressions

We don’t know who Ariana Grande is, but she’s one talented girl. She does an amazing impression of Céline Dion starting at 4:40 in this clip, but you need to at least watch from the 3:40 mark. Better yet, take 6 minutes out of your busy day and watch the whole thing.

3 Cool Things – Art, Golf, Sexting

We recently checked out Facebook and found some great videos people were posting (along with cute animal videos, which we all know is what the Internet was invented for). So we’re going to share some with you. And if we get brave, there may one day be a Sydney & Irene Facebook page.

1. Who needs a paintbrush

One of us is very gifted when it comes to art and one of us can’t draw stick people. But neither of us can imagine doing this.

2. Who invented golf?

Here’s the answer from that brilliant, wonderful man, Robin Williams.

3. Sexting

Would you ever use a friend’s phone for a prank sext? Our friend, Jack – who will soon be a guest on the blog – would…and has. As it turns out, so would Amy Schumer.

3 Seriously Cool Videos (from the 3CTs archives)

Yes, we’ve been blogging for two years and we have archives to draw on! So what better thing to do than bring back some of our favourite videos, and at the same time accommodate our crazy summer schedule (lazing on the patio).

1. Mauna Kea Heavens Timelapse

The Mauna Kea Heavens video, taken by Sean Goebel at the Mauna Kea Observatories in Hawaii, is one of our favourite 3CTs. The first time I watched it, I thought, ‘that’s what goes on in the sky that we can’t see’?

Music: “All is Violent, All is Bright” by God is an Astronaut.

I’m a fan of Wayne Dyer, Gary Zukav, Caroline Myss and Rhonda Byrne – all those folks that write about the magic and the mystery we don’t see, or can’t see, simply because we don’t believe it’s there. Sean’s video reminded me of how much magic, mystery and beauty there is in the world that we never see, often because of the noise we’ve created in our world and our lives.

You can also read all about how Sean made the video here. I foolishly thought that all one did to create a time lapse video was to set up a camera, turn it on, and leave it running for a few days. As it turns out, it’s a wee bit more complicated than that. And I’m thinking maybe it didn’t all feel like magic and mystery at the time. But it is!

2. A documentary about music

Movies count as videos, right? Searching for Sugar Man is a perfect choice for those rainy summer days when the only thing to do, is watch the telly.

First astonishing fact we didn’t know: South Africa is as beautiful as California.

Second astonishing fact we didn’t know – or weren’t sure about: there are still remarkably humble people in the world.

Third astonishing fact we always knew: there are amazing film makers in the world.

This is a beautiful movie about a beautiful man. It’s available from Amazon, and of course, it’s on Netflix.

 3. Summer romance means a First Kiss

Nothing better than summer romance and that first kiss. In case you missed this video when it came out, it features a bunch of strangers being asked to kiss. Granted, none of them are hideous, but it’s still a beautiful video and a great song. The blue link under the video will take you to iTunes where you can download the song.

3 Cool Science Things

1. Lab Bench to Park Bench

Lab Bench to Park Bench is a blog belonging to a fellow Ottawa WP blogger, Amelia Buchanan. Through her blog, Amelia brings science to the non-scientific mind through things like interviews with flowers! It’s a great bilingual blog for both the adult and student in your household. Next time you’re headed out for a hike, check out Amelia’s blog before you go – it will make your walk a lot more interesting.

2. Bill Nye Ties One On

Bill Nye is everyone’s favourite science guy. Just saying his name makes you think of science and his well known television show, The Science Guy. Actually, his official full name is Bill Nye the Science Guy. He’s also famous for his ever present bow ties. In this video Bill teaches Chris Hardwick how to tie one on.

3. The Science of Love

When you think of love do you think of science? I was thinking of love the other night and googled it and found some very interesting stuff. Did you know there are 3 stages of love? Stage 1: Lust. Stage 2: Attraction. Stage 3: Attachment. The link below will take you  to the love site.

Your Amazing Brain… The Science of Love

Psychologists have shown it takes between 90 seconds and 4 minutes to decide if you like someone. This is really amazing ( I wonder if it takes longer as we get older?)

Research has shown this has little to do with what is said, rather

  • 55% is through body language

  • 38% is the tone and speed of their voice (I guess this where the term “fast talker” comes from).

  • Only 7% is through what they say.

I also learned how to fall in love. There’s a love formula and apparently it works if you follow these 3 simple steps.

1. Find a complete stranger.

2. Reveal to each other intimate details about your lives for half and hour.

3. Then stare deeply into each others eyes without talking for four minutes.

Sounds easy enough doesn’t it? I’ll give it a try and report back.

3 Cool Things to do in and around Ottawa if you’re not spending the summer in Paris

by Sydney

Summer brings out the best in everyone and we all like to spend as much time as possible enjoying everything Ottawa has to offer. You can probably find similar resources in your city, so check out your municipal website and let us know what you’re up to!

1. Ottawa Festivals

Ottawa is one of the most beautiful cities in Canada and we’re lucky to have the canal and Gatineau Park so close by. There are 15 festivals throughout the year beginning in January with the world famous Winterlude and ending with the Ottawa Wine and Food Festival in November. You can find out more here – Ottawa Tourism.

2. Things to Do

If you love camping, horseback riding, hiking and wine tasting (this is an outdoor activity too) it’s all within reach. Prince Edward County is about 3 hours from Ottawa and Gatineau Park is a quick drive across the river… no excuse not to get out of the house and have some fun!

If you need some inspiration, check out the NCC’s Things to Do page.

3. Road Trips.

Who doesn’t love a road trip!

Montreal is a short drive and so is the American border for those awesome weekend trips to the ocean. For more great road trip destinations check out the Ottawa Road Trips website.

A road trip is a lot more fun in a Honda S2000.

1 VERY Cool Thing – in Paris!

So our 3 Cool Things is down to 1 Cool Thing this week, but it’s worth 3 Cool Things.

First, just to let you know we’re now going to incorporate our 3CTs into the blog page, so you don’t have to go to another page. All previous 3CTs are still there, but from now on, they’ll be right here where we always publish our posts. Now onto this week’s 1 Cool Thing!

1. Josie Takes On Paris…

Our readers know we’re a bit obsessed with Paris (mostly it’s Sydney with the obsession) and we often joke about our posts taking place in Paris because whenever we use ‘Paris’ in the post title we get lots of traffic to the blog. But now, we really do have someone on the ground in Paris!

Our friend Josie recently moved to Paris for a work assignment and she’s started a blog, aptly called ‘So work brought me to Paris…’ It’s a great blog and we’re going to have a link to it on our sidebar while she’s there. Just look for the photo below on the sidebar (yep, it’s there now), click on the photo, and it will take you to Josie’s blog. Go ahead and give it a try here and enjoy Josie’s blog!
